Whats my story?

My name is Morley Paterson. I am 25 years old, in my second year of mechanical engineering at the University of Alberta. I graduated from the Cardston High School in June of 2009; Served as a missionary for my church (LDS) for two years, and then began my trek to beome a mechanical engineer.

Growing up I worked in a mechanic shop, I preformed various small mechanical jobs such as fixing tires, changing oil, replacing parts like alternators and batteries and so forth. Working at this shop is what helped me realize how I enjoyed working with mechanically based things. After considering, for quite some time, becoming a mechanic I realized that while this would be enjoyable it would not give me the limitless possibilities I was looking for.

There were three things that made me decide that engineering was the field of study I wanted to pursue. First I seem to have an unquenchable desire to progress, once I have attempted something and feel like I have conqured it, I like to try something new. This cycle never seems to end. Anything from sports to academics, everything seems to be a challenge waiting to be conqured. Second, and fairly closely related, I want to be able to build anything. I dont like having to have someone else do things for me because I am unable. Whatever home renovation or vehicle fix or crazy invention I can come up with, I want the skill set to be able to build or fix it. Third of all and possibly most important to me is the fact that I want to be able to provide for my family. I recently have gotten married and plan on someday having a family to provide for. While this is my pride and joy it is also quite expensive, a good stable job is a necessary part of the puzzle if this is to be realistic.

A little bit about me.

Motorcycles have always been something I love. I have been riding my own for a couple of seasons now, and have owned 4 bikes already. Ive enjoyed both the relaxation of a cruiser bike as well as the adrenilin pumping ride of a sport bike.

I started skiing when I was 2 years old. My dad would hold me on a leash and let me ski in front of him. Since then I have made sure to hit the slopes at least a couple of times a year.

The first time I ever shot a gun I was probably 5 or 6. My dad let me pull the trigger on his bolt action .22 and its never gotten old since.

This is the solid model built on Solidworks of the FSAE car. This is one of the founding reasons I started the engineering program. Being able to see something go from the solid model to a real car is a lot of fun.

I had the opportunity to work for TransCanada in the summer of 2013 as a student engineer and get some project manager experience. This was a valuable time, I worked under a great PEng. who gave me a lot of responsibility and freedom. I was given projects and put in charge of them as the project manager, I was responsible for handling all aspects of the projects from concept, to design, to implimentation, I helped compile a multi million dollar budget for the site, as well as preformed calculations for multi million dollar projects.

Education

University Of Alberta (2013-2016)- Just finished my fourth year of Mechanical Engineering at the UofA. Its been a great experience, and I am excited to move out into the working world of engineers.

Medicine Hat College (2012-2013)- Did my first year of Engineering at the Medicine Hat College. The transfer program that the college has  allowed me to transfer straight into second year at the UofA without any kind of hassel or red tape.

Cardston High School (2006-2009)- Graduated a semester early from Cardston High School in 2009 with 23% credits more than required. I then took a couple of years away from school before returning to the education field.

Working for Acuren has been a great experience, and has helped build my knowledge base and experience as a student engineer. Having a reputation for the largest materials and NDT company in the world Acuren was a great place for me to learn more about the material side of mechanical engineering. I spent my time traveling around Canada doing visual inspections on small bore piping systems, and giving them a liklihood of failure score. Then returning to the office I wrote engineering reports on these setups for delivery to the client.
